Timothy R. Dougherty, Jr., MD

Timothy R. Dougherty, Jr., MD, grew up in New England and attended Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the U.S. Air Force. He served as an officer and later as a civilian before attending the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Upon graduation in 2008, he was honored with the Hatem Memorial Prize for Humanism in Medicine.

Dr. Dougherty completed his post-graduate training at George Washington University, beginning with a residency in Internal Medicine. In 2011, he was named the George Washington/Inova Fairfax Resident of the Year. He continued his specialized training at George Washington through the Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases fellowship program, subsequently serving on the faculty there for three years before joining the Gastro Health team.

His clinical interests include colorectal cancer screening, esophageal diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver disorders. Dr. Dougherty has published and presented on various topics, including eosinophilic esophagitis, Hepatitis E, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Dougherty resides in Northern Virginia with his wife and family. He enjoys cooking, traveling, and running. He is an avid spectator of his daughters’ artistic and athletic pursuits.
