About Thomas W. Abernathy, Jr., MD

Dr. Thomas Abernathy is a native of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, growing up in Silver Spring, MD. He graduated with Honors from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He continued his studies in Philadelphia at the Medical College of Pennsylvania & Hahnemann University of Medicine (now Drexel University School of Medicine) where he received his medical degree. Dr. Abernathy returned to the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area and attended the MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Here is where he completed his Internal Medicine Residency Program and soon after, his MedStar Washington Hospital Center / Georgetown University Gastroenterology & Hepatology Fellowship Program. In 2005, he joined Digestive Disorders Associates in Annapolis, MD and in 2008, he embarked on a new opportunity with Digestive Disease Associates (now Gastro Health), who have offices in Catonsville and Columbia.
Dr. Abernathy is interested in all aspects of gastroenterology but has a special interest in treating constipation, gastroesophageal reflux disease, colon cancer screening and hemorrhoid banding. Dr. Abernathy enjoys participating in health fairs and other community service projects throughout Maryland. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, his friends and attending auto races (Formula 1, IRL, IMSA). He is an avid skier and snowboarder, and may be getting into cycling soon. He attends church and participates in community service projects through his fraternal organization.
