About Robert A. Shaffer, MD

Dr. Shaffer joined Gastro Health in July 2005 and practices at our St. Vincent’s East, Gardendale and Pell City care centers. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Troy State University and his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His internship and residency were performed at Carolinas Medical Center and his Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellowship was performed at the University of Arkansas for the Medical Sciences where he developed a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease, NASH, Hepatobiliary disorders and Therapeutic ERCP.

He is the recipient of the Medical Student Enrichment Program International Scholar Award, National Humanism in Medicine Award, Sarah B. Davis Humanism in Medicine Award, CMC International European Exchange Scholar, and was honored as Preceptor Of The Year for the Family Practice Residency at St. Vincent’s East.

Dr. Shaffer is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Hepato-Gastroenterology.  His interests and experience includes General GI, Hepatology, Pancreatology, EGD, Colonoscopy, Enteroscopy, Capsule endoscopy, ERCP, Liver Biopsy, PEG, Esophageal/Colonic Stenting, APC, IRC, EMR, Banding of Esophageal Varices, Hemmorhoids, Treatment of Hepatitis B/C, Pre and Post Liver Transplant, GI Bleed, and treatment of Celiac Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Esophageal Motility Disorders.

Dr. Shaffer is a current member of the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and is the immediate past President of the Alabama Gastroenterological Society.
