About Alan F. Ansher, MD
Alan F. Ansher, MD, is a native Washingtonian who has practiced medicine in Alexandria for over 30 years. Throughout his distinguished career, he has performed more than 60,000 colonoscopies and upper endoscopies, making him one of the region's most experienced gastroenterologists.
Dr. Ansher graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland, where he served as the Valedictorian Student Speaker for the 1978 Commencement. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, graduating magna cum laude and ranking second in his class. During his time there, he received the Sandoz Award for Superior Academic Achievement and Contribution to Healthcare.
He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital, where he published extensive research on topics ranging from colonic polyps to pancreatitis. In 1987, the American College of Gastroenterology honored him for publishing the "Paper of the Year."
A recognized leader in his field, Dr. Ansher was the first physician in the Washington area to perform laser lithotripsy on gallstones in the bile ducts. His expertise has been featured on CNN, the Washington Times, and local news channels 4 and 9. He is repeatedly cited as a "Top Physician" by Washingtonian Magazine and recognized as an outstanding specialist by Washington Consumers’ Checkbook. Dr. Ansher is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and has previously served as the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Chairperson of the Nutrition Committee at Alexandria Hospital.
