Don’t Ignore Frequent Heartburn
Heartburn is common. Many people experience it occasionally after eating spicy foods, drinking alcohol, or eating a large meal. But frequent heartburn should not be ignored, especially if it happens several times a week.
Frequent heartburn is often a sign of acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD occurs when stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Over time, this constant irritation can damage the lining of the esophagus.
The Link to Barrett’s Esophagus
Long-term acid reflux can lead to a condition called Barrett’s esophagus. In Barrett’s esophagus, the normal cells lining the esophagus change due to repeated exposure to stomach acid.
While Barrett’s esophagus itself may not cause noticeable symptoms, it is important because it increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer.
When to See a Gastroenterologist
You should talk to a doctor if you experience:
- Heartburn two or more times per week
- Heartburn that persists despite over-the-counter medications
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chronic cough, hoarseness, or throat irritation
- Chest discomfort or regurgitation of food or acid
A gastroenterologist may recommend tests such as an upper endoscopy, which allows doctors to examine the esophagus and check for inflammation, Barrett’s esophagus, or other problems.
Protect Your Health
The good news is that GERD and Barrett’s esophagus can often be managed or monitored when caught early. Treatment may include lifestyle changes, medications to reduce stomach acid, and regular monitoring if Barrett’s esophagus is diagnosed.
