Gastro Health, a national, leading medical group specializing in digestive and liver health, has named Eugenio (Gene) Hernandez, MD, as its Chief Medical Officer.
Gastro Health’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will ensure that clinical perspectives are integral to its strategic decisions, enhancing the organization’s ability to deliver high-quality patient care. The CMO will oversee clinical operations across all markets, focusing on enhancing clinical quality, patient safety, and operational efficiency. The CMO will work closely with the Vice Presidents of Clinical Affairs in each market and other physician leaders, providing leadership and support to ensure that clinical standards are consistently met and exceeded.
Eugenio (Gene) Hernandez, MD, began private practice in South Florida in 1998 and is a founding member of Gastro Health. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Hernandez has been working as the Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs for Florida and serves as the current physician representative on the Board of Directors. His previous experience also includes the development of clinical service lines and ambulatory surgical centers.
Dr. Hernandez earned both his BA and MD from Duke University where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine. He completed fellowships in Gastroenterology and Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. He is Board-certified in Gastroenterology.

Gastro Health has a presence in seven states – Florida, Alabama, Washington, Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, and Massachusetts – with over 350 physicians and 150 locations consisting of medical offices, infusion centers, imaging services, and a specialty pharmacy. Additionally, Gastro Health owns and operates endoscopy centers in five of the seven states and operates pathology and anesthesia services.
