Care Philosophy

I am happy to work with patients to improve their gastrointestinal health and its association with their overall health and sense of well being.

About Michael A. Garone, MD, FACG

Dr. Garone’s career in medicine began with his interest in research. While earning his undergraduate degree at Union College in New York, he was awarded departmental honors in biology for his research in the field of endocrinology. After graduating, he spent a year in epidemiology research at Harvard Medical School before entering Albany Medical School. During his residency training, he was again involved in research, studying pancreatic disease and bile salt.

After completing a fellowship in gastroenterology at George Washington University Hospital, Dr. Garone opened a private practice in Fairfax County in 1986 and was soon joined by Dr. Scudera. In 1998, they merged their flourishing practice with the well-established practice of Dr. Mirkin to form the foundation of Gastroenterology Associates of Northern Virginia. In November 2019, Gastroenterology of Northern Virginia partnered with Gastro Health to establish a Gastro Health Virginia Division.

Over the years, Dr. Garone has served as an active member of the Fairfax County Medical Society, a delegate for the Medical Society of Virginia, Chief of Gastroenterology at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, a member on many Inova-related hospital committees, and serves on the medical advisory committee of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s national capital area chapter.

Dr. Garone has been recognized as one of the area’s top gastroenterologists in several publications, including The Washingtonian, Northern Virginia Magazine and Checkbook Magazine.
