What is Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)?

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is a FDA approved, incision-less, weight loss procedure performed to help patients with a body mass index (BMI) up to 45 reduce abdominal fat and decrease risks of developing more serious weight-related health problems including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes.

If diet and exercise did not help you lose weight in the past, ESG could be an option for you.

Benefits & Risks

This non-invasive technique is performed to help patients feel full faster without losing the integrity of the stomach's natural microbes that help to maintain brain health. The reduction in stomach capacity supports long-term weight loss without interfering with nutrient absorption.

Side effects include pain and nausea following the procedure that can be managed with pain and nausea medication.

What to Expect

You will be given specific instructions to prepare for your ESG. Your physician may request that you don’t eat or drink after midnight on the day of your procedure.

During your procedure,an endoscope is inserted into your throat and down to your stomach. Your physician will reduce the size of your stomach by stitching to the stomach lining using a cross-stitch technique to reduce stomach capacity by cinching the stomach inward. This process means that you’ll feel fuller faster after eating. The procedure takes about 60 to 90 minutes.

An ESG requires anesthesia. Under these circumstances, patients are required to have a licensed driver take them back home. Your doctor will place you on a liquid diet post-procedure. Eventually, you will transition back to solid foods.
